Weave a Basket
Goodbye plastic! Learn how to weave baskets from Canary Island palm fronds
A day of traditional crafts for a more sustainable life
The Canary Island palm (Phoenix canariensis) is in the foreground. Why is it so special? Why isn’t it a tree? How can I tell the males from the females? How old can palm trees get? How is palm honey made? What is a palm broom? And, above all: how can we weave a basket from it?
During a short walk, we gather the materials, prepare them and start by weaving the round base. This is best done on the floor, but those with back problems can use the table. During the lunch break, we serve a homemade Canarian snack. We then work on the side walls whilst seated on chairs. By the end of the workshop, everyone has a handmade basket ready – a unique, handcrafted souvenir from La Gomera!

What is the Gomera Rural Life Experience?
It’s an opportunity to experience rural life on La Gomera in an authentic and first-hand way. Gomera Rural Life Experience is an active experience – you are the one who creates, does and experiences something special. I only work with small groups, always responding individually to the participants’ needs. We work with – and not against – nature, and with – and not against – people. We place great importance on mindful communication and the conscious use of resources.
We use our own products and organic produce from the island
We try not to produce any rubbish
We support organic farming and biodiversity
We value traditional craftsmanship and heritage
We cultivate a mindful and appreciative attitude
